These are probably the first planters on sale at Northcote Pottery Supplies since the move from Thornbury. They're by Chris Wright and they're decorated in his retro Happy Triffid design - I can imagine them with a cactus growing out of them.... was that a Christmas present idea I just had!

Fear of missing out

Fear of missing out affects many aspects of our lives, how we dress, what we say, who we hang out with. What sort of house we buy, our penchant for new furniture and the latest fashion. How we search for that one special person, trawling the internet or scouring darkened nightclubs. This fear of missing out is even more amplified in lives of adolescents as they navigate the school cliques, the bullies and the moraes of social networking.

When I was a teenager, I had a recurring nightmare about a checkerboard that expanded, gradually covering the world. I no longer have the nightmare, but it has become part of my personal imagery. The checkerboard has become synonymous with the plastic that factories continually produce, the cities that creep ever outwards, unsustainable population growth, the cancer that creeps within our bodies and the newest fears that are continually promoted by the media.

Many of the works in this exhibition also reference current forms of communication used by teenagers. Texting which is overtaking and changing our written languages, also wields the power to torment and bully. And of course, the characters stem from my work about Alice, and my use of her as a metaphor for the adolescent experience.

The Line, The Vessel

Sue McFarland has given us some fantastic little stoneware vessels with very lovely glazing. They are slip cast, so that wavy bottom is visible on the inside too, which creates some great effects.

It's been a while, but we have some new work from Andrew Widdis. This picture shows a set of lovely bowls with a satin white glaze on the outside and a warmer coloured glaze on the inside. Plus we have some little blue ones that you can see in our store and you can see what Andrew has been up to on his blog.

NEWS

Changes are afoot. With the increased interest in classes and workshops we are reorganizing the space here at Northcote Pottery Supplies to add another classroom. This means that Pan Gallery and SMALLpieces are combining. The Pan Gallery name will no longer be used and a different model is being adopted. SMALLpieces will now contain within it a Featured Artist Space where a more concentrated display of artists' work can be exhibited. We can now have big pieces! We are excited by the changes and hope it leads to more artists showing their work here. We will keep you posted when the evolution occurs.

This is a terracotta dry glaze planter bought from an exhibition at the original Northcote Pottery kiln gallery. Unfortunately all documentation for it has been lost. Does anyone know who made it? There is a stamp, but I can't make it out. I believe it was purchased around the late 90s...maybe. Any ideas?

Graphic artist Yen Yen Lo has turned her hand to ceramics, she's been having things fired at Northcote Pottery Supplies for a while and I've talked her into supplying us with some work. The pictured image is my favorite and I had my eye on it to buy for myself, but it was snapped up before I had a chance to!

The plate is about 10cm long, so this rabbit is really small!

Pisco Runa

Mabelle Marra makes work inspired by her Argentinean background. Her pots are fired by traditional pre-Columbian methods: you can see her in action here. This is a trust necklace - inspired by a vessel that opposing parties would both drink from to prove their commitment and to show that no poison was involved! The figure is Pisco Runa or Bird Man - he's chewing some sort of tobacco - I love his puffy cheek.

Old World Brooches

Helen Morfesse makes brooches using Japanese tissue transfer overdecorated with lustre and underglazes. It's quite a rich opulent effect, a bit old worldy and very alluring. This is a simple example, others are decorated much more intensely.

I'm not a fan of birds in cages, but for some reason I do like bird cages. At the moment I've been amusing myself with shop displays featuring them. Above is a set of Salt & Pepper shakers by Katie Jacobs looking a bit like they'd rather be on some one's kitchen table than in that cage. Below is a set of 1970's Japanese decorative birds looking like they want to get out too - but unfortunately they're display only and not for sale. But if any one wants to give Katie's finches a good home....
